In light of the recent earthquake in Haiti impacting over 3 million people, several organizations and supporters have joined forces with The Dreams for Youth Wutang Movement to coordinate Haiti relief efforts in New York and New Jersey. Drop Off Centers, as well as a Fundraiser Event and Drive have been set-up to collect emergency supplies, dry goods, and clothing. Efforts are being coordinated through Edeyo Foundation (501c3 organization) to ensure supplies reach Haiti and distributed in an effective manner. To coordinate large donations, please contact Zein Rahemtulla directly at 678.570.1596.

Examples of emergency relief items needed are:

• Non-perishable dry food and can goods (that can be easily opened without a can opener; cans with tab opening)

Originally planned to be held in Fort Greene Park and hosted by Spike Lee, this event has now been moved to Prospect Park to accommodate what is expected to be a crowd of over 20,000. Spike has chosen the Nethermead Meadow which is located at the southern end of the park as the site for this momentous event. 12-5 p.m. DJ Spinna will be on the Wheels of Steel.

Interesting concept. Drive in theater. 40 lucky spectators enjoy a live performance orchestrated by Italian theater and film creator Dario D'Ambrosi.

The performance will be free for an audience that will be limited to 40 spectators each night. They will view the live action from within parked cars, listening with headsets. Growing up this festival meant the world to me. Every year I would find myself in the athletic fields of Boys & Girls High School finding treasures I could anywhere else. It's where I bought my first doll as a collector. It's where I bought my first print by Leroy Campbell and met him. It's where I revel in the greatness represented by the diaspora every 4th of July weekend.

So unless you've in hiding everyone knows one of the best places to be on a Saturday night is the Brooklyn Museum of Art. Now I know you thought I was going to mention some swanky lounge in DUMBO (hey if you know of any let me know) or dining in a great seafood restaurant in Sheepshead Bay but alas we have a nice spot for you in Prospect Heights, Brooklyn.

Well to be clear it's the first Saturday of each month year-round. First Saturdays has become one of the most widely attended events in New York City. Starting at 5 p.m. entrance is free. Each program boasts a theme with matching book readings, live music, museum talks and a DJ. Come and peruse it's extensive collections of art from Africa and the Pacific Islands or enjoy contemporary photography and other installations. My personal favorite are the American oil paintings. Some of the most intriguing are old renderings of Brooklyn. I've also noticed that the very young hip and good-looking come here to see and be seen. And I don't blame them. It's a great time to be young and on the prowl. Of course you will have your share of families, baby carriages and couples holding hands (e.g. me included). It's a grand time for everyone.
